NARRATIVE
ON PRINT - The sheet of water shown is the
New, or Outer Harbour. In
the Old, or Inner Harbour, most of the shipping
appears. The conversion of the Inner Harbour
into a wet dock was completed in September
1877, and it is in that condition it appears
in the picture.
On 18th February 1882 the dock entrance collapsed,
and the dock has thus fallen back again, in
the meantime, to the condition of a tidal
harbour. Plans for the restoration of the
dock entrance have been obtained by the Harbour
Trustees. (Notes
by George Hay, 1883)
